The Proposition
Modular Design Concept
The very low head turbine (VLHT) has been designed to be incorporated into a steel or concrete modular caisson. The caisson is to be built in a dry dock and floated out and sunk onto a bed of stone in an estuary (proven technology). Seven turbines, each with a nine-metre diameter, will be incorporated into a single modular caisson. Multiple caissons will then be installed in a tidal bar or lagoon.
VLHT Design
We are currently analysing the manufacturing and operating costs of two design architectures. Rim generator vs hub generator.
The work is being carried out in collaboration with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). The £114 MWH levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) is based on traditional manufacturing methods and we expect to reduce this cost on completion of our studies.
